The Distance Between Enough, Chapter One

I.I
The blood red Chevy Corvette pulled into the two-door garage slowly. Its driver was concerned enough to take his time. With his body beat to shit, Asher Hayes didn’t want the same for his car.

The Underground Championship rested in the passenger’s seat. A title he went to war over, and retained. It was a symbol of his survival.

He held other symbols, as well. On his face, under the left eye, sat a bruise. His bottom lip was split towards the right corner. There were lumps on his back and around his chest. Aches in his ribs.

All the usual.

The aches and pains. Bumps and bruises. They’d been there since Asher joined a wrestling school. They had only gotten worse as he’d gotten older.

His body had been on the receiving end of the abuse for as long as he could remember, and despite the substances he poisoned his body with, Asher remembered every single scar.

Like his tattoos, each one had a story. A meaning. The scars he collected from Rise to Greatness were from finding himself at war against Kimberly Williams, David Striker, and Kemal Yimaz.

He told them, and himself, they would all be pushed to the brink of death. Asher made it so. Asher gave himself the mission of making the Underground title match mean more than the World title main event. For his championship to mean more than that title Deanna walked away with.

With that win, Deanna was a triple champion. It made Asher’s stomach turn.

He recalled holding the Television Championship and earning a shot at the Adrenaline title. Asher vacated his belt so others could get the chance to elevate themselves.

To earn the mark of champion.

That concept was something Deanna seemed to only care about if it involved Selena.

Her match had such a happy ending. She and Amelia hugged one another to close the show. It was all too happy. It was all so happy that everything seemed fake.

One hundred percent authentically fake.

There was nothing happy in the Underground. Happiness doesn’t push you towards survival. Asher knew that as fact. With Kim, it had always been about the silliness. Asher had his own brand of silliness at one point, but it never got him anywhere.

He refused to regress. He refused to resort to that mentality ever again.

Asher knew he was no cartoon.

Placing the car in park, he turned the engine off. There was a growl. A rumble.

Then, silence.

Silence surrounded Asher as he pulled the Underground title from the passenger seat.

Holding it in his hands, Asher took comfort in retaining his championship. He took comfort, as well as pride, in putting his body through hell. With the victory, and doing what needed to be done to obtain it, Asher felt he made his presence felt within the SCW once again.

It was then he started to question.

How long was my presence felt?

He thought of Amelia and Deanna once again. There was Syren. Asher couldn’t forget Gavin, either.

He sighed.

I could’ve done more. Another sigh. Should’ve done more.

I.2
Asher took a morning shower. It was cold to give his body a jolt. There was a rush of pain at first, but it subsided quickly.

He woke up, continuing to think he could’ve done more at Rise to Greatness. The shower didn’t freeze those thoughts in their place.

Asher knew he needed to put his focus on something else. With the SCW going on a much needed hiatus, he told himself it was the perfect time to do something different.

Figuring no one would really remember when he had a book deal, where Asher pulled from facts and displayed everything as fiction, he broke out his laptop and placed it at his desk. The desk was in an office room he set up not long after moving to California. Within the office, there was nothing else but a bookshelf with a litany of detective novels that he’d inherited from his adoptive father after the man passed.

He and a younger Asher read the books together.

Taking in a deep breath before exhaling heavily, dust blew to the sides of the keys and in front of Asher’s face. The dust caused the Underground Champion to cough which made him laugh at the same time.

Not even weed made you cough that much.

The thought of God’s special grass made Asher realize that he didn’t want to write about drugs or crime as he did last time. That book was nothing but a chapter of his life. A chapter that reached its closing moment. A book that Asher didn’t want reopened ever again.

Staring down at the keys, ideas ran rampant throughout his head, but nothing seemed to click until Asher settled on something he never expected.

Himself.
His wrestling career.
His life outside the ropes.
His legacy.

All topics that had filled his mind for the last several months so, Asher wrote.

His fingers raced across the keyboard, words appearing onscreen, starting from the biggest fight he’d had with his adoptive father who wasn’t anywhere near being Asher’s biggest supporter when expressing his desire to become a pro wrestler.

That led Asher to writing about saving money while taking on odd jobs so he could join a wrestling school. As his fingers worked tirelessly, Asher did something he’d not done in a hot minute.

He smiled.
He felt happy.
Excited.

But just as those first few chapters came to a halt, as did those feelings.
As did his smile.

Everything reverted back to thinking about how Asher could’ve done more for his match, for his division, for his championship at Rise to Greatness.

Closing Word, Asher went to the main SCW website. He clicked on the PLE/PPV link, and pulled up his match at the big event. As soon as the bell rang, Asher couldn’t look away. His eyes watched closely, studying everything. Every single move he made.

“You messed up there,” he whispered while stroking his beard. “That was an excellent move,” Asher said. “Give yourself some credit.”

The match progressed, just as his notes did. “Kim could’ve pulled it off, dude. Where were you? Come on!” Asher shouted before leaning back and running his hands through his hair, shaking it in a frenzy. Exhaling through his nostrils, he leaned forward. “Striker could’ve done more damage right then if you hadn’t moved when you did. You should’ve been just a little quicker.”

“You’ve gotta use your head, dude. Way more than you did tonight,” Asher muttered. “You’re going to cost yourself and you don’t even realize.”

His critique continued, with Asher telling himself he could’ve pushed farther. He’d pause. Rewind.

“Should’ve taken that opportunity.”

Another pause.

“What were you thinking there?”

He’d rewind again.

“Should’ve planted Kim right then and there. Could’ve ended it all.”

The action continued, and watching as he got the pin cover to retain the title, Asher closed the laptop in disgust. He shook his head while climbing to his feet, before exiting the office and entering the kitchen. His movements had a dark cloud over them.

Like a quiet obsession.

And that was the house.
Quiet.
No one there to talk to.
Asher lived in solitude, and it wasn’t by choice.
Not exactly.

He had Emily. He had Clint.
But Asher kept them at a distance.
For their own good.
To protect them.

He sighed and grabbed his car keys, returning to the garage and the Corvette. He backed it out into the drive then let drift onto the highway before Asher opened it up, his foot on the gas, pressing it down as far as he could, telling himself he had to get out of the house, as there was no one there.

No one there to protect him.
From himself.

1.3
The Corvette barreled down the highway. The top was down and the wind rushed through Asher’s hair. It was as if his thoughts were unable to keep up with the rest of him, as the car picked up speed once again.

With Queens of the Stone Age rocking out on his radio, Asher wanted to put distance between him and the house. Between him and his thoughts. An old familiar chuckle vibrated in the wind.

Driving eased Asher’s mind. He’d do so at various times when trying to fight any urges to crack open a beer, light up a joint, or plunge a needle into the vein.

Sometimes it’d help.
Sometimes it wouldn’t.
Either way, he was running…or driving…from something.

This time, his attempts were to flee the self inflicted pressure he’d given himself.

The City of Angels welcomed Asher, pulling him into the heart of it all. It was still early morning and the former U.S. Champion needed coffee.

His mental state had exhausted him already, so when the sign for his favorite coffee shop came into view, Asher could taste his favorite beverage.

Stepping inside, not all eyes were on Asher as they’d been in Chicago. He still had people come up to him in the street or in the gym, so it wasn’t out of the ordinary. Not being as hounded as he had been was the definition of refreshing.

He placed his order and took a seat at a table in the back.

While waiting, Asher did something he always hated doing. He knew it would happen despite the hatred. It was a nagging impulse. There were some scratches addicts had to scratch.

He went into wrestling discords and his ghost X account. He read comments.

Praise for Deanna Frost and overcoming all the so-called odds she’d been against. Praise for Amelia for returning from her exodus on the dark side. Praise for Syren and Selena. Luz. Shaun and Bree. And then, he saw his name mentioned.

It was a mixed bag.

Asher received his praise. But there were comments like Kimmy should be Underground Champion. Why is Asher still wrestling? Isn’t Asher too old for the Underground?

When is Asher going to go after the World Championship? He beat Deanna to retain a few years ago. He’s wasting away in the Underground division.

He saw something else, too.

Asher Hayes will never be as good as Cid.

Pressing his thumb against his teeth, Asher chewed the nail. It wasn’t out of anxiety. It was out of frustration.

Pure.
Raw.

Moments like this are evidence that you need people in your life.

Asher chewed and chewed. The nail rested in the center of his tongue.

“Hayes?”

He swallowed the nail.

“Hayes? Coffee for Asher…Hayes?”

The Underground Champion glanced up to see a young man staring at him. “Are you…Holy sh…” he cut himself off, whispering as he continued, “You’re Asher Hayes? The wrestler, right?”

Looking around, Asher noticed people were looking towards them but only for a few minutes before going about their business.

“Dude, chill!” Asher yelled via whisper. “But yes, I’m Asher Hayes.”

“The wrestler?”

“Yeah, yeah.” Asher nodded. “That’s me. Pleasure to meet you…whoever you are.”

“The name’s Adam.”

“I hope you’re not a total tool like another Adam I’ve met.”

Coffee shop Adam chuckled. “Nah. I’m nothing like Adam Allocco. I wouldn’t be working here if I was. Dude has talent.”

“He’s a bit of a bitch,” Asher said before shaking his head. “I mean, he’s alright.” Adam looked like he was desperate to keep the conversation going. Asher sipped his coffee, signing. “So, you’re a wrestling fan? I’ve not met many since moving out here.” It was a lie but he wanted the kid to feel, and appear, less sad.

“Oh yeah, man. I love it. I’ve loved it since I was like eight years old. Became a fan of the SCW when Shawn Winters beat that Valiant fool back in the day. I’ve not missed a Rise to Greatness show since then.”

Asher went to speak but Adam couldn’t help himself. “And dude, I saw your last match. That was amazing, man. Probably the best performance I’ve seen from you in a little bit.”

Asher bit his tongue. He took a sip of his coffee. “Best performance you’ve seen from me in awhile, huh?”

Adam began blinking rapidly. “Oh, man. I’m really sorry. I wasn’t trying to offend you. I’ve never seen a bad match from you. I was thinking last year at Rise to Greatness…you could tell you were struggling. This year, you showed what you were capable of. And then some.”

Asher grinned. “I appreciate that,” he lied. “I wanted to make up for last year. It was an abysmal performance. I’ve had a few of those. Last year took the cake, though. I’ve wanted to change things for myself. I’ve wanted to make up for a lot. To do…” he paused, realizing he was saying something he didn’t want to, “more.”

“Well,” Adam said. “As a fan, I’ve gotta say that you’ve done more than you realize. But this year, your match and performance at Rise to Greatness,” the young man scoffed, “I’m not sure what you’ve gotta do to top that.”

A little piece of Asher died at that moment. He just gave an awkward nod towards Adam, who he could tell wanted to keep things alive. It took the young man a few moments but realization hit and he nodded back at Asher before walking away.

And he walked away, too.

The words stuck with Asher as he made his way back to his car. They remained there as he started the Corvette up and pulled back out into the highway. The words traveled with him all the way home.

How do I top that?

1.4
Asher stepped inside, returning to his office. The laptop was still turned on when he opened it.

Along the ride back, Asher received a notification that SCW’s wheels were starting to turn once again. Cards were going to be created and dropped for performers to know what was happening in the coming weeks, match wise.

Asher checked his work email, and that was where he saw it. What his next match would be. It’d be the second Breakdown back from the hiatus. And it stopped the questions rummaging through his mind when he saw his scheduled opponent.

Dexter Grant.
The current United States Champion.
Asher felt something rather pleasant at that moment.

Interested.

He remembered their first contest a few months prior. Things ended with Asher as the winner, but not in the manner he would’ve preferred. Dexter got himself disqualified.

That alone left Asher with that feeling of wanting more.

He addressed Dexter in the buildup to Asher’s next match, telling him that they weren’t finished yet. That Dexter had a receipt coming.

Things had changed since then. Dexter had moved up the ladder of success, graduating from the Adrenaline Championship to the second most prestigious title in the company.

And, Asher knew there were many things he could say about Dexter. He knew that time and place would come but all Asher could think about in that moment was the concept that would surely be placed upon their match.

Champion versus Champion.

A ratings grabber.
A money maker.
It was catchy.

But Asher felt it could mean so much more.

There’s that word again.

More.

“You love Uggo,” Asher mumbled to himself. “You love him, but that love you had for your Kismet,” he closed his eyes, visualizing the SCW World Championship draped over his left shoulder, “it never died. You’ve tried to stifle it, but that’s just one more war you’ve lost. It’s just time you accept it…”

Asher opened his eyes, again.

He DID want to reclaim his Kismet. People questioned him and his involvement in the Underground title. Just as Dexter questioned the entire purpose behind their previous match.

“Dexter thought you were nothing more than a stepping stone to Cid,” Asher sighed. “But little did he know that by getting himself disqualified, he shot himself in the foot before shoving that foot in his mouth.”

Asher told himself that Dexter thought he was ready to compete at the highest of levels. That was why he made Asher out to be a stepping stone. He showed his true colors, informing the world that he had to take the easy way out and cost himself a win against a supposed stepping stone.

Asher also told himself that by stepping against Dexter for another round, and taking him to his limits and pushing him further, before dropping the Digital Detoxer on his head to seal the deal with a three count, then Asher would be taking just one more step closer to his ultimate goal.

“If…if I can beat him…”

Asher closed the laptop once again. He reminded himself once again that things had changed with Dexter. He had the attention of Frank and his cohorts. There was Polly. Lawler. Konrad’s bastard children. They were all gunning for Dexter.

And Asher, despite retaining as Dexter did at Rise to Greatness, was seen as an afterthought, more than likely.

He turned Frank down months before and for Asher, that wouldn’t change. He refused to be a casualty in someone else’s war. He knew what he saw in Dexter. Asher knew what everyone saw in Dexter.

He was the newest name to be dropped under the category of ‘fastest rising star’. Asher had been under that moniker before. The only difference was time and experience. Asher had experienced losses time after time. Injuries. Crowds turning on him. Him having to turn on friends and those he respected.

The war Asher seemed to wage was against himself.

To him, when their paths ultimately crossed, Asher told himself he’d have to fight harder than before. Harder than he did at Rise to Greatness, because accepting a DQ win over Dexter wasn’t going to be enough.

He needed more.

Dexter would be the casualty. The Digital Detoxer…the fastest rising star…had no choice.

Asher sighed as he stared out of his office window. “He just doesn’t know it yet.”
