She felt the pain before she opened her eyes. Before she even really regained consciousness. It just attacked her – or had it slowly come into existence as the painkillers had worn off? She couldn’t really be sure. She hadn’t felt discomfort as she had lay there on her bed, her mind dreaming… actually she wasn’t sure if she had been dreaming or, if she even had, what she had been dreaming. And even if she could remember, the sudden stinging, burning pain had destroyed any memory of it as it shot from her neck, down her shoulders and into a bit of her left hand.
She could not help the groan that escaped her from it, making her back arch up, which only further irritated the source of her pain, causing her to force her body back down into the soft mattress, her eyes shoot open, revealing to her mostly darkness, and her breath suddenly very labored where, not a minute ago, it had been quite even from her slumbering. She clenched her jaw and tightened her hands into fists against the pain and the frustrations that came with it as her mind fully awoke.
It had all been bullshit! Every step of it!
It had been frustrating enough when Xander Valentine had been saved by Billy, the Executioner being knocked out by Selena’s Glass Shard and her team on the cusp of, thus, winning the Trios Tournament finals – THAT was just part of the rules of such a multi-man match and something she had to live with.
But then… to have that bastard…
Her jaw clenched more so and she felt her back teeth press hard against one another. They had been so close! Her team had performed perfectly! Working together, being united, they had outwrestled Xander’s team in EVERY way! Polly was tougher, taking so much damage from Xander and the others, Raynes had sure as hell made his shots count! And Selena, herself? She had led the troops perfectly!
But then Blake Mason had to get involved!
Angrily, the Snow Queen tried – emphasis on ‘tried’ – to move her head to a more comfortable position to ease the pain in her neck but it was useless. The stinging persisted, which only furthered her thoughts to be centered on the culprit.
It was a setup. It had to be! She had, eventually, seen the match replay, the nod Mason had given to Billy! Of course it was! And Xander had done nothing about it! Had just… let it happen! Amelia… well, Selena wasn’t sure how the tag-champion had taken this, but she highly doubted it was enough for her friend to want to ‘relinquish’ the Trios contract.
But no… Blake, clearly, had had a target and a goal: to take Selena out of the finals so her team couldn’t win! Remove the serpent’s head and the rest would die.
And now… thanks to him and a piledriver… she was without a Trios contract and another loss tacked onto her year. Not that a loss truly meant anything to her. She had gone the better part of seven months of the year without a single loss to her name. In fact, the only loss aside from this one had been Rise to Greatness, which was slowly becoming more of a blessing with the power she now wielded throughout SCW – being as big, if not bigger, star than the damn world champion. Which only made the situation more frustrating for the platinum-blonde!
It was Josh that wanted the ‘Wild, Wild West!’ She thought bitterly.
And yet he's having a respectable match with Amy! Complete with handshakes and integrity - devoid of any such things like run-ins and attacks! And here I am being screwed out of what is rightfully mine!
It was a rather frustrating reality check for the Snow Queen. Nobody had interfered on behalf of either Josh or Amy in the world championship match! No one had run in and spiked Josh with a piledriver. And yet, he was the one advocating for this ‘new SCW’ in the first place! All the while being protected from the people that would hold him to that mark such as Kristen Scott and Kandis. In fact, with the aforementioned former thorns in Selena’s side affectively neutralized in SCW, Josh had remained, relatively, safe. But not Selena…
Another wave of burning, stinging pain took hold of the former world champion, bringing more frustration and annoyance with it and causing her to try and push herself off the bed to a standing position. She was not going to get any more sleep at this rate. Every movement exasperated the pain. Slowly, Selena dragged her feet along the floor of her bedroom of the luxury bus as it rumbled and gutted across the Interstate, continuing its long journey back to New York City. With every jolt, every lane change, every swerve of movement to ‘stay in the current lane’, Selena felt it right in her neck where Blake had driven her into the steel…
She could not recall any other time she had been piledrived. She had seen it happen quite a number of times. Hell, she had even seen see her boss, O. D., take one. But to receive one was new to her. And she did not like it. Not one bit. True, there was a chance that maybe it was the result of the match that was also exasperating the pain and frustration. But deep down, she wasn't just frustrated for losing a match and a contract. Not when she had one that got her a world title match whenever she felt like it. No, the platinum-blonde, despite the pain, was still able to allow herself to be honest with her feelings in the privacy of her own bedroom. She could deduce Masons actions later, at least where she, herself, was concerned. Petty jealousy, a cry for attention, a rocket to the top of the ranks for the world title he craved – those were just off the top of her head giving him a single second of thought. It was hardly original. There were a dozen or so people with the same mentality against her – from Billy to Kristen Scott to Kandis to Scott Reed.
But what truly sat with her now was what Blake’s decision had cost Andrew and Polly. She had no love loss for either of them. Quite honestly, she didn't really care too much about what happened to them. And yet, she would be lying to herself if she said there wasn't a part of her, perhaps some small part of her being stirred awake by the words of Polly, Amelia, Xander, Josh, and Deanna - Words of a return. Words wishing for Selena to ‘come back’ - A part of her that had
wanted to see Andrew and Paulie win Trios contracts. A part of her that would have felt proud to have led such a team to victory and to see them both, especially Polly, be given such an opportunity. Because, at the end of the day, they had both performed admirably – respectfully, even! And Polly...
Selena let herself sigh aloud. She truly felt for the young woman. Being stuck in the same place for so long. Trapped with seemingly no way out. She could definitely relate to that. It was why she had pushed the point so hard in that changeroom after Breakdown a few weeks back. Because she truly believed Polly had potential to be so much more. That the young woman was on the cusp of truly breaking through the glass ceiling that had barely stopped her from beating the Snow Queen in a cage match months ago.
But, thanks to Blake, Trios was not going to be the answer for the poor girl. Polly and Andrew would have to find another way, not like Selena with her rematch contract. Even so, even with her future still intact and her ‘owed’ title shot still a thing, she could not shake the feeling in her mind.
About how all the pieces seem to click together…

“GODDAMMIT!” Selena cried out loud, grasping the end of the ‘bench-mattress’ that she sat on, her nails digging into the leather and her knuckles turning white in the process, as the doctor tried to tilt her head and neck towards her shoulder. “I already told you it hurts, you quack!” she yelled out, gasping as the searing pain ran through her. It felt like her neck, shoulder and left arm were on fire and would burn off any second, leaving the former world champion as little more than a pile of ashes.
Not sure anyone would care much about that… she thought bitterly, inhaling and exhaling loudly through her mouth to try and ease out the pain she felt. Still, the wretched doctor persisted, even trying to rub her neck with those damn fingers.
Do I even look interested in you, you old creep?! Her mind screamed, even though most of her brain logically knew that the man was just trying to do his job.
“Just give me something for the pain so I can get out of here!” she ordered angrily.
“Something for the pain? Haven’t heard Selena Frost say THAT in awhile.”
Hearing the voice, Selena’s eyes closed and she released an audible groan, but because her neck was a ) in so much pain and b ) was so stiff, she did not really move it. Instead, she merely opened her eyes, once more seeing the interior of the ‘doctor’s office’, or rather the place SCW had picked within the arena for the physician’s ‘space’ for Apocalypse. It took only a few seconds before the new voice realized Selena wasn’t going to look at him and, instead, moved around to stand in her line of sight.
“You want me to look you in the eyes and say it again?” he teased.
“Fuck you.” Selena growled. “I have no issue kicking you in the head and walking out of here again. Contract or no.” she added with a hiss.
Not believing her for a moment, CHBK crossed his arms over his chest, eyeing the former world champion. “You going to cause problems because of this?”
“HA!” Selena laughed out loud. “What part of what just happened should I just ‘let go’ and be okay with?” she asked amusingly. “The fact that my team got screwed out of the finals? The part where I got piledrived into steel by someone that wasn’t even in the goddamn match? Or the fact that you, knowing all of this, did nothing about it?!”
“Like I did nothing about it at Taking Hold of the Flame when an interference helped YOU beat Xander and get to Rise to Greatness?” he asked without much difficulty.
“I didn’t ask Kandis to run in! She was trying to screw with me!” Selena countered. “I took advantage of that! That wasn’t the same thing and you know it!” she added.
“Never the less…” The SCW icon shrugged. “You said nothing when it benefitted you, so don’t be crying when it doesn’t. Turnabout is fair play.”
“Spoken like a damn politician. I can’t believe I actually miss O..” The Snow Queen grumbled, but then sighed, slowly, and with much difficulty (not to mention to the surprise of CHBK) turned her head a little to stare directly into the eyes of the Hall of Famer. “You’re really okay with this?” she asked, her tone actually dropping from bitterness to a softer tone, but still rather seriousness. “Just…” she sighed. “Forget about me for a second here, Alex, okay? This…” she waved her right hand in the air. “This, at best, slowed me down. At best…” she added, a warning tone in her voice. “We both know the world title will be mine again. Just a matter of time.”
“If you have a point to this, it’s rather late…” CHBK started, not accept the prediction but not quite refuting it either.
“It’s Polly!” Selena shot out, her body tensing as the emotion caused her to move jerkily and, thus, her neck making her pay for it. “Painkillers, please!” she shouted to the doctor, who quickly moved away from her. “Goddamn it…” she growled, her hands returning to grip the leather mattress that supported her seated weight, taking a few loud breaths in and out to quell her pains as best she could, at least enough for her to continue speaking to the icon. “It’s Polly…” she started again. “And, even Raynes… they…” she breathed through the stinging in her neck. “They deserve better than this!” she settled on saying. “They worked so hard, got so close – for Odin’s sake, Alex, they put up with me as their ‘leader’! If we had lost fairly, I’d… I’d be okay with it. They would too, I know! But you’re telling me all their hard work was for nothing because Blake Mason got involved?! Really?!”
There was a look of surprise on the old man’s face as he heard Selena’s words, perhaps surprised that they were not words about herself for a change.
Whatever… the Snow Queen thought bitterly.
Think whatever the hell you want about me… I CAN think of other people!
“And you can’t…” she breathed. “You can’t tell me this is going to sit well with Amelia. Billy? Sure. Maybe even with Xander with what little time he has left and his obsession to have whatever kind of ‘win’ he can get over me, but Amelia?” Selena shook her head. “No way.”
To her surprise, the icon seemed to actually hear the Snow Queen’s words, not just dismiss her outright or curse her just as quickly like some of their previous conversations. Still, with a sigh, he merely shook his head. “It is what it is.” He finally answered with, what seemed, a sad expression on his face. “But they both proved a lot in this tournament. I’m not going to forget that.”
“Sure, you won’t.” Selena scoffed in disbelief. “Least not till you get another decrepit ‘icon’ to suddenly ‘come back’ to SCW.”
“Alright…” the legend rolled his eyes. “I just came to see if that piledriver was as bad as it looked.” he stated simply. “But if you’re well enough to mouth off at me, guess it isn’t that bad.”
With that said, he turned to go, his hand reaching towards the door he had just entered through.
“Wait!” Selena wasn’t sure who had said that until she replayed it in her mind and recognized her own voice talking, as it continued to do so. “About earlier…with…” She felt her throat hitch and it had nothing to do with her pinched nerves or the needle being jabbed into her arm by the doctor as he administered the requested painkiller. “With Deanna, I mean…” she breathed, ignoring the growing feeling of numbness that started to flood through her system. “Th…” she slightly stammered but quickly controlled herself. “Thank you… for telling me… and getting people down there… and getting her to a hospital… and looking after her…and… for saving her life… I…”
I don’t know what I’d do if I lost her completely.
You not only saved her life but also mine.
I’ll never forget this or even be able to repay you for it…
She released a long exhale. “Just thanks…” Was all she managed to get out. “And for that thing for Breakdown… I don’t want that to change, okay? Despite this. Just… keep it as we talked about, okay? Pl…please…”
“Sure.” Alex nodded in understanding before finally disappearing out of sight, the door closing behind him. Alone with the doctor, Selena returned her attention back over to him, the ‘healer’ (for lack of a better word), beginning to pack up his instruments.
“Doc.” She called out, regaining his attention. “Give me another shot.” She ordered, her eyes growing dark.
“I…excuse me?” The doctor asked in surprise. “That dose was fine for you, Mrs.-“
“You gave me the ‘kid’s dose’.” Selena stated, her tone growing colder. “I want something stronger.”
Her head tilted… and she felt no pain. “Or do I have to tell CHBK that you refused to help his main-event?”
She didn’t really need the second dose… she could admit that to herself… but, after tonight, she wanted it…
And fuck… did it feel good!

“GOD-FUCKING-DAMMIT!” Selena growled out as she grasped her hands on the counter of her bedroom aboard the bus, trying to get her head to just stay in any position of ‘less pain’ long enough for her to have a complete thought without it being interrupted by the stinging-pain in her neck, arm, and hand from the pinched nerve.
A fucking stinger! That’s what she had! The piledriver had pinched the nerves in her neck and now they were bruised or something, she had no idea! She just wanted to think for a moment!
Speaking of which… what the hell had she been thinking when she spoke to Alex?! ‘THANKS’?! THANKS?! That’s what she had said? That’s what she had chosen to say to that old bastard?!
Who was it that brought Blake Mason into SCW in the first place?!
Who’s REWARDING Xander with not only a Trios contract, but ‘the next world title shot’ if the past Breakdowns were any indication?!
Who is LETTING Blake and Billy get away with this SHIT?!!
Her devil-mind shouted these accusations at nauseum, all pushing the same question forward: Why didn’t you talk to him about these things?! Pinned him to the wall with this blatant favouritism for the old-legends?! Caught him in whatever lie he had thrown?!
And despite her pain and anger and frustration and even sadness for Polly and, to a lesser extent, Andrew Raynes, Selena’s answer wouldn’t change in her mind.
It…hadn’t been important at the time.
A long sigh escaped her as the woman, slowly, moved herself across the space, using the counter of her dresser for the needed support. She wished to Odin she had a better thing to say, but the truth was that, in the end, despite it all, the situation of the Trios Finals had, simply, not been as important to her in that ‘doctor’s room’ as Deanna being taken care of and safe. Yes, she was pissed about the former. Of course she was! She could have done so much with that damn contract! But… even so… CHBK, SCW management… they had saved Deanna’s life.
And that… Selena sighed… that STILL trumped everything!
Reaching the desired cupboard, Selena pulled the damn thing open seeing the yellow, plastic bottle roll out towards her. Clearly, the painkiller from the doctor did not have a long ‘lasting’ term… but she knew what did…
Without hesitation, the platinum-blonde twisted open the cap, ignoring the stings in her neck and arm as she held her hand up and out towards the container, watching as only one clear-gel pill fell into her hand, immediately setting off a panic in her system. How could she only have one left? The trip back home was at least 44 hours and she was certain she had only covered four of those hours if the digital clock on her nightstand was any indication! How could she not have checked?! Hadn’t she checked?!
She felt herself tense at the realization of her NX shortage, her neck stiffening and… the sting came back with a vengeance that rivaled Kandis and Xander put together! Without thinking, she stuffed the last pill into her mouth. She’d worry about the lack of NX when this one wore off! Long as the pain stopped for a bit! She thought as she swallowed the pill and held herself still for what felt like several minutes, though it was probably less than three, slowly feeling the familiar numbness of the stronger painkiller. It allowed her breathing to slow and her mind to grow a little clearer. Enough that she could pull herself back into bed.
Yes… she thought as she gently placed herself back onto the mattress, pulling the covers over her.
Tomorrow…
Alex…
Trios…
The world championship…
My NX supply… she breathed as she slowly felt the world fading away to the NX’s numbing effect.
I’ll worry about all of it… tomorrow…
