Dogfight in Dusseldorf did not go the way Clyde Sutter had hoped. The Assassin is a man who believes firmly in the hand of fate, but fate on this occasion was not on his side. Not only did he fail in his task to defeat Adam Brock, but he was also rocked to his very core with the unexpected arrival of his sister, Lilith Sutter in Dusseldorf. The Assassin has had a problem with his sister lately. She has constantly reached out, constantly harassed him in an attempt to convince him to drop everything and join her. The problem for Clyde is that Lilith represents everything wrong about his past. She represents a past and bad, painful memories that he would much rather forget. He cannot forget, at least not as long as she continues to pursue him. It is impossible to forget about his painful past as long as she continues to show up in his life, as long as she continues to harass him. What’s worse is that he knows the harassment will only begin to impact him in the worst of ways. One could argue the unexpected arrival of his sister while he was in Dusseldorf caused him to lose focus and led to his downfall to Adam Brock. Sutter will never say as much, because hs isn’t the type to make excuses. But he has to ask, would things have been different had he not been rocked to his core by his sister?
There are other concerns for The Assassin; namely his rage and anger. Every single time that Lilith has reached out to him, either by phone, text, or face to face, he felt his anger start to boil over. He had worked so very hard to control his temper and to focus and channel his anger. Yet with each visit from his sister, he feels himself losing control more and more. This is what scares him the most; what if he does eventually lose control? He already knows the answer. If he loses control he risks losing everything…his career with SCW and the new family he has built with his biological mother and his girlfriend, his beloved Melinda Braaddock. Sutter will not risk any of this coming to pass. He will do anything to make sure that his anger, his rage are all in check. He cannot let his sister get under his skin. He cannot let her win. This is why Clyde has decided to go to the one person who he feels might be able to help him; his therapist.
We open inside of a brightly lit room, a stark contrast to the man sitting in this room who is typically all doom and gloom; that would be Clyde Sutter. The Assassin has a deep, contemplative expression on his face as he gazes upward into nothingness. He has a neatly trimmed beard and his dark hair is pulled back into a small bun. His outfit consists of a stylish black leather jacket with silver zippers, a white button-up shirt underneath, and fitted black pants. His hands are clasped together in front of him, resting on his lap in a relaxed but intentional posture. He sits on a simple black chair, with his legs slightly spread apart, his feet planted firmly on the ground. The floor beneath him has a textured, patterned carpet, adding depth to the setting. There is another chair, matching the one Sutter himself sits in, that is perpendicular to him. That chair is empty for now, but not for long. The Assassin can hear footsteps approaching from just outside the door. He doesn’t bother to turn his head to greet the soon to be visitor. He just waits calmly, patiently, as the door eventually opens up. In walks the psychiatrist, Dr. Evelyn Carter. She has shoulder length brown hair and is wearing a tailored nay-blue blazer over a soft pastel silk blouse. A delicate silver necklace rests just below her collarbone. She pairs her blazer with a knee-length skirt, and low-heeled shoes.
“Good afternoon, Clyde.” Dr. Carter says in her typically upbeat and cheerful tone. Sutter still does not bat an eye, but he does acknowledge her with a nod of the head.
“Ms. Carter…”
“It has been quite a long time since our last session, Clyde.” She takes a look at the notes she brought into the room with her, studying them closely. “Four months?”
“That sounds right.”
“And if I recall, we began this treatment by seeing each other once a month to treat your severe anger management issues. You made excellent progress, so much so that we both felt comfortable enough making our sessions less frequent. Now we only see each other every six months.
“Correct.”
“That’s what I thought.” Evelyn sighs and her cheerful facade drops, indicating that she is a little nervous about her patient’s visit. “So I have to ask, why did you insist on another session now when you are not due for another two months?”
Clyde is noticeably uncomfortable with this whole situation, which shows with how he moves around in the chair. He doesn’t like therapists. He doesn’t like psychiatrists. He believes that they are making money simply by telling him how he feels. It is a scam, in his mind. But Sutter also is fully aware that Melinda Braddock may not trust him if he were to cease seeing this psychiatrist and he will do anything for Melinda, the love of his life. In this case, he needs to see the psychiatrist because certain events have begun to unfold that might cause this ‘progress’ he has made to fall apart.
“It is…complicated…” Sutter answers slowly.
“It may be complicated but I am certain we can get to the bottom of this together.” She says, her cheerful smile returning to her face. “So let’s begin with your wrestling career. I heard you got a new job, correct?”
“Yes.” Clyde says, an uncharacteristic smile of his own forming on his face. “It took my beloved pulling some strings but I got another contract with Supreme Championship Wrestling. A second chance is rare.”
“It is very rare!” She says excitedly. “I am proud of you, Clyde! How have things gone?”
“I will not pretend that everything has been perfect. My return has had its good times and some bad. Still, I am with SCW, where I wanted to be from the beginning, and despite losing my most recent match in Germany to Adam Brock, I am in an overall upward trajectory. My next match is for the Television Championship against a woman named Ryan. Ryan LeCavalier.” He smirks. “Her fate is sealed.”
“Well I am pleased that you got your job back in SCW and that you are right where you feel you belong. And a title match to boot! That must make you feel wonderful!”
“It is pleasing to see that my hard work is paying off and that management can see how valuable I am.” Sutter remarks quietly. Evelyn scribbles a few notes on her notepad. Then she looks back up at Sutter to ask him another question.
“So, what about your personal relationships? How have they been progressing?”
“I have gotten closer with my biological mother and her husband.”
“Wonderful!”
“We shall see.” Sutter sighs. “But most importantly, I have the love of my life, Melinda Braddock.”
“Ah yes, the girlfriend.” Dr. Carter winks. “I recall you felt strongly for her. How is that relationship going?”
“It is going remarkably well.” He says, nodding his head. “I am very lucky to have her back in my life.”
“Ok, then…” Evelyn furrows her brow out of curiosity “...that all sounds great, Clyde, but, uh, I don’t see anything bad here. Or maybe I should rephrase that, huh? I don’t see anything that has upset your progress, nothing that would warrant you coming back to see me two months early.”
“How astute you are, Ms. Carter…” Clyde chuckles softly as he adjusts himself in his seat, sitting up with his elbows on his knees and his head resting in his hands as he stares across at her “...an unexpected development has come up, one that it is not welcome because it threatens everything that I have achieved in these sessions.”
“This sounds serious.” Dr. Carter responds, her cheerful demeanor once more giving way to a more serious tone. “Tell me…what’s wrong?”
“It is my sister.” Clyde answers simply. “She has returned to my life.”
“Your sister?” Evelyn grins. “What’s so bad about your sister, Clyde?”
You do NOT understand!” The Assassin exclaims in a bout of rage. Evelyn is taken aback but not overly surprised. She is used to these outbursts in her profession. She is able to maintain her composure and professionalism.
“Mr. Sutter…” she begins calmly “...tell me more about your sister.”
“Yes…that would be best. My apologies for that outburst. It’s just that Lilith…my sister…she can be very upsetting.”
“What exactly has she done to upset you?”
“Here mere presence alone is enough to upset me, Ms. Carter.” Clyde remarks with a low growl. “She reminds me too much of my father.”
“I apologize, Clyde, but didn’t you tell me in one of our previous sessions that you were an orphan and you never met your father?”
“Correct.” He nods his head. “But I have been told plenty about the kind of man he was and the stories I have heard offend me, they nauseate me.” Sutter shakes his head. “I do not wish to be anything like my father.”
“I suspect there is a connection here between your father and your sister.” Dr. Carter scribbles some more notes on her pad. “Tell me more.”
“My father, Ethan Sutter, was a soulless individual. He was also crazy and I mean that in every sense of the word, Ms. Carter. He was so damn crazy that he joined a cult, rose in its ranks to eventually become its leader.” He shakes his head. “And he never gave a damn about anyone or anything else but that damned cult.”
“Where exactly does your sister fit in?” Evelyn asks. “Is she still a member of this cult?”
“No.” He shakes his head. “It mostly fell apart long ago but my sister is in charge of whatever remains of it. She has changed it considerably.”
“Changed it into what?”
“I do not know.” Clyde shrugs his shoulders. “What concerns me is that she wants me to join her. She wants me to help her with what she mockingly calls…the family business.”
“I see.”
“I do not want anything to do with my sister!” Clyde starts to raise his voice again. “I do not want to be a part of that organization, even if it isn’t the same cult it once was. I do not want anything to do with my past! But Lilith will not go away…”
“I believe I see the problem. You want to start over. You want a clean slate.”
“Yes!” Clyde says, sighing with a hint of relief. “You understand me!”
“I understand your desire to start over but unfortunately things are never that easy, especially not when it comes to family, and from the sounds of things your sister is very persistent.”
“You have no idea how persistent she is…” Clyde says quietly.
“You may want to start fresh but you just cannot ignore your past and you cannot ignore your family. You will have to confront your demons if you truly want to heal from the past.”
“You make it sound very easy, Ms. Carter.” Clyde remarks, shaking his head. “But you have no idea how dangerous my sister is. I do not wish to put my beloved, my Melinda, at risk.”
“She is dangerous?” The psychiatrist asks. Clyde nods his head.
“Yes.”
“Then once she makes a threat against you, against Melinda, or anyone else close to you, go to the authorities and you can get a restraining order. I still firmly believe confronting her and your past is the healthiest thing to do but if safety is the concern, then you should talk to the authorities, not to me.”
“That’s the problem.” Sutter sighs. “Lilith is smart. Too smart.”
“She hasn’t done anything yet that would make a judge grant you a restraining order, has she?”
“You are indeed very astute.” Sutter nods his head. “Correct, she has not.”
“I have to be astute. It’s part of my job.” Evelyn winks. “Like I said, you may have to bite the bullet and confront her. It may be the only way to make her go away. Until then you must continue your practices of meditation and other healthy ways of releasing your anger. I know your sister is a problem right now but you cannot let her undo everything you have worked for.”
“That’s why I came, hoping you could help.” Sutter sighs and shakes his head. “Unfortunately I just heard what I already knew…”
“Well we can return to once a month sessions if you wish…until your business with your sister is taken care of?”
“I will consider it but hopefully that will not be necessary.” The Assassin stands up. “I am certain I can contain my anger…for Melinda’s sake.”
“And your sister?”
“My sister…” he growls “...she will be safe as long as she does not provoke me.”
“Clyde, please sit.” Dr. Carter says quietly but firmly. Sutter pauses for a moment before reluctantly sitting back down. She nods her head. “Very good. I know that your sister is causing you grief right now, but those kinds of harsh…threatening even…those words are not healthy.”
“It’s the truth.”
“But they’re threatening.” She remarks. “You literally just said your sister is safe as long as she does not provoke you. How can I know that you will control yourself? How can I be certain that you will be able to contain your temper, to keep it in check?”
“I have kept myself in check thus far, have I not?” Clyde asks; he is beginning to sound frustrated.
“Yes, you have, but you have admitted that your sister is getting under your skin. How far can she push you before you are provoked? How much can you take before you lose your cool?”
“I see…” Sutter sighs and shakes his head “...all I can do is promise that I can keep my temper in check. Did you watch my performance in Dusseldorf? I did not lose control, despite the loss.”
“Yes, I saw, and while that is promising, I still cannot just take you at your word.” She sighs. “I would feel better if I prescribed you a very mild antidepressant.”
“Medication?” He snarls. He can feel the anger start to boil over again but he catches himself and calms himself down. “I haven’t…I haven’t been put on medication while under your care. I would rather not…with my past, especially involving drug abuse, I just would feel better if you gave me a chance to continue handling this on my own without medication.”
“There’s no shame in taking medication for your condition, Clyde.”
“It isn’t about shame.” He shakes his head. “Well…maybe part of it is shame. I have done so well and made so much progress on my own without the drugs, without medication. Knowing that I had to resort to that all because my sister got the better of me, because she got into my head,” he sighs “I would feel awful.”
He locks eyes with Evelyn Carter. This intimidating, imposing figure now feels very small as he is almost pleading with her not to put him on medication. It is a pride situation for him. His problem is with his sister and he doesn’t want to have to go on medication to control his anger simply because his sister has driven him to it. But his fate is not in his hands, it is in the hands of his psychiatrist. Finally, after a tense pause, the doctor nods her head.
“Very well…against my better judgment I will let you continue as you were for now.”
“Thank you.” Sutter says, breathing a sigh of relief.
“You’re not off the hook yet.” She says authoritatively. “If you won’t go on medication then we need to start having more frequent sessions. I understand you have a busy schedule with SCW, we can work around it. It doesn’t have to be a regular monthly thing. Just whenever you can make time to visit, then by all means do so. Even if we have to do a zoom call, someway to keep each other updated. Is that ok with you, Clyde?”
“Yes, that is fine.” He nods his head.
