Wish upon a star.
It was like any other night for the young wrestler called Kaito, he was a man who found it difficult to find success in the business. People told him it was never his fault, it just wasn’t his time, but he knew that wasn’t true. It was his fault because even with his talent in the ring it ended up never being enough to push himself to the next level. This was always a hurdle for a budding pro wrestler. Sometimes it was just difficult to stand out, capture the imagination of the fans and bookers alike. But of course in the future that is all different, but before?
Two years in fact, things were a lot different for our young Emerge Superstar…
“You need to pay your rent!”
We fade in to an apartment building in Tokyo Japan, to make life easier everything said has been translated for your understanding. The image we get is that of an older man, he is rather large around the midsection having piled on a few pounds over the years, his hair receding a little also. He is leaning against a doorframe with his foot wedged between that and the door. A panicked voice comes from the other side of the door who is hurriedly trying to close it…
“I need more time; this week hasn’t been good to me!”
We switch sides of the door and we see Kaito pleading to the man we now realize is his landlord.
Landlord: “That not my problem, you need to get real job!”
Kaito: “I have real job, Mr. Nagata… I just have not got paid yet, but soon!”
Mr. Nagata: “Porn is not a real job, fondling with men all night is for recreation, not work!”
Kaito pauses for a moment…
Kaito: “Porn?! I wrestle! I do not do porn; my mother would not forgive me!”
The landlord looks at Kaito squinty eyed and shrugs.
Mr. Nagata: “It matters not, do not be ashamed! It is 2016 now loving other men is the norm, my nephew is all into that side of things. I shall give him your number, make sure you give me rent soon otherwise I will have to find someone else to live here.”
Kaito tried to respond but the landlord shuts the door, his demand for rent still very fresh in his mind. But the words escaping the lips of Kaito aren’t about rent.
Kaito: “But it’s not porn… I’m not gay…”
Kaito follows up with a sigh and walks back into the apartment and sumps down into the leather sofa which has clearly seen better days. So much so you would be remiss to not have seen a mouse or two run away from behind it.
Kaito: “This is not good… I need to find a job…”
Looking at his indestructible Nokia of old, he refuses to play snake but dials a number instead. Waiting a few moments, he begins to speak.
Kaito: “Hello there, sir it’s Kaito again…”
“Who?!”
Kaito feverishly laughs to himself before continuing.
Kaito: “It Is Kaito, I spoke with you the other day about a possible booking on your card next week?”
“You did? I do not remember, are you sure? Are you good?”
Kaito: “Good! I am better than good! I am great! I have been doing this now for long time, I have many matches under my belt.”
There is a silence which befalls the phone, Kaito arches an eyebrow wondering if the line died but then a loud crash is heard from the other side of the phone and then a lot of yelling which forces him to remove it from his ear…
“BECAREFUL WITH THAT YOU FUCKING FUCK! YOU BREAK IT, YOU BUY IT!”
Another sudden pause but the voice from the other end speaks out.
“Sorry bout that, can’t find help these days. You know how to set up ring?”
Kaito’s yes widened…
“I pay of course and then we talk about adding you to card but not next week… tonight!”
Kaito: “TONIGHT?! YES! I can set up ring, many rings I have set up in past. I am happy to help!”
“Good, Come to Shizuoka. I will text you details. You have till tonight.”
Kaito: “Thank you! Thank you, I will not let you down!”
“Don’t.”
The promotor then hung the phone, Kaito lowers his phone back onto the coffee table in front of him. The thought of having money later tonight was exciting, being able to pay rent to Mr. Nagata even more exciting. That was until he thought of something and pulled out a map of Japan and laid it out on the table….
Kaito: “How far is Shizuoka…?”
Tracing lines with his finger, he searches the map squinting his eyes until he finds it. A city which had nice views of Mount Fuji.
Kaito: “I should probably leave now…”
Kaito leaps to his feet and runs into the bedroom tripping over himself in the process. We follow of course where he grabs his gear and throws it into a duffle bag and looks around for other things he can take with him. He opens up a can and removes some Yen, what little Yen he had left for what was surely for a train ticket.
Hours later…
Time is relative they say, there are days it goes incredibly slow while others where it breezes by. This was one such instance for Kaito because as soon as he had arrived at the venue he was made to set up the ring. Suffice to say it was tiring, of course it would be accompanied by the travel time. But it was worth it if he got to wrestle and that he did.
Didn’t win.
But he got to wrestle and he got paid! It wasn’t much but enough to cover travel and the rent he owed. We fade back in to Kaito jubilant as every while counting the money he had just earned.
He smiled a mile wide while leaving the venue, it was late. Very late in fact but he was oblivious to this notion due to being so proud of himself. It was the simple things in life which did that to the best of us.
Kaito: “Oh my, I cannot wait for Mr Nagata to see this! That’ll show him saying I don’t have real job!”
“Show him what?”
The voice startled Kaito as it came from out of the shadows. He turned to see two men in typical clothes. They seemed a little drunk based of how one staggered.
“Well?”
Kaito feigned a smile before quickly putting his Yen in his pocket.
Kaito: “Oh… uh nothing important!”
Guy: “Was that some Yen I see? How much you got?!”
Guy 2: “Think it’s enough to to get more drink?”
The two men turn to each other to discuss it further while Kaito stands there. It’s then he realizes they are distracted with themselves and slowly backs away before one noticed and cried out…
Guy 2: “Get him!”
Kaito spun on his heels and started to run, he didn’t know these two men but feared for his earnings and also his life. This was a new city for him having mostly stayed in Tokyo but it is here where he continues to run.
He darts past a few people who keep to themselves as many seldom do. He runs down an alley way trying to find an escape route but has little luck. It is here where he reaches a dead end.
The sound of footsteps from behind him cause Kaito to turn around with added concern. Both men stop at the entrance to the alley, their silhouettes looking all the more menacing.
Guy: “I don’t like running, you’re going to pay for that.”
Both walk I to the Alley and pick up something, stick or pole. It doesn’t look inviting to say the least.
Kaito: “Please, don’t do this I have rent to pay! I worked had for this.”
Guy 2: “Don’t care, we’re thirsty.”
The second guy drags his pole along the floor, the scrape sound sends a shiver down Kaito’s spine. He begins to look around frantically before spotting a fence that lead to a freeway.
Rushing over he looks down to see cars barreling past at high speeds
Guy: “Just give us the money, we won’t hurt you.”
Guy 2: “Much… haha”
The two men laugh, the fear of losing everything and not only paying Mr. Nagata but get a ticket Home was worse than his own well being. So with one fluid motion Kaito runs up the wall and vaults to the top of the fence.
He looks down at the men and salutes them almost cockily as he throws his leg over and leaps down to the side of the freeway.. But he was higher than first thought and lost his footing as he landed..
Kaito stumbles into the freeway into the oncoming traffic and the worst that could happen does. A screeching the tires the deer caught in the headlights look and a crash as Kaito is hit by a Lorry. It swerved but he still get caught by the side and sent flying into the wall.
His money explodes out of his pocket as he lands there. Kaito looks Up I. Shock, unable to say a word with the pain running through his body. A light shines brightly in the sky, a shooting star.. or maybe an Angel coming to take him away…
He didn’t know…
But with the concept of time still going on, we have it fast forward showing the two men looking down from the fence and quickly running away. The driver of the lorry calls an ambulance and it’s there soon after we find ourselves inside a hospital room.
Kaito laying in a bed, hooked up to a monitor. He has bandages on his head as he lays there quietly like death.
“Ok, Wake up.”
The voice is unrecognizable but that doesn’t stop Kaito snapping his eyes open to it. He lays there with a neck brace on and looks around with his eyes to no luck.
Kaito: “Who.. there?!”
“The Easter bunny, who’d you think?!”
He didn’t know, that was until he turned his head ever so slightly to see a Cat, a stuffed one sat on the counter beside him. It has a Get Well Soon tag wrapped around its neck.
Kaito laughs but that stops when he sees it turn it’s head to him and winks…
Kaito: “What the… Fu-“
The end…
The camera rolls with Kaito sitting on a rocking horse with Haruto on his lap. He is somewhere but we don’t know quite where. He smiles to the camera which is ring held by someone.
Kaito: “Hello. My name is Kaito and this is Haruto… Say hello Haruto”
There is a pause as Kaito holds the stuffed animal up but a voice emanates from it.
Haruto: “Fuck off Kaito, I’m not doing this again.”
Kaito looks at Haruto shocked at the language…
Kaito: “Many apologies laddies and gentleman, he is very grumpy and camera shy. I however am not! Which is why I am here! I, Kaito have a very special chance to prove oneself once again to each and every one of you! Much like my idol Ikiro Yoshida, I too fell in bad times and wanted to make a return!”
Kaito: “I am very grateful that Emerge gifted me this second chance and I did not look to squander it! Haruto is so very jealous of me right now because he says I am going to be sandwiched between three beautiful women.”
Kaito: “But while he ogles them for their booty I see only the talent they have and their ambition to succeed! Success is important and I do very hope I am able to do this also. I still owe rent and being on a Pay by appearance contract. I have to make every moment count!”
Kaito stops rocking and steps off the tiny horse, he places Haruto there who grumbles.
Haruto: “You better grab their asses!”
Kaito: “I will do NO such thing. We cannot.”
Haruto: “Surely there is an ass grab hold out there you virgin!”
Kaito stops and looks at Haruto shaking his finger at him
Kaito: “I told you that in confidence l!!”
Haruto laughs as Kaito spins back to look at the camera.
Kaito: “Sorry he isn’t usually like this!! Where was I?”
Haruto: “Grabbing ass!”
Kaito: “Quiet!! No ass grabbing, only wrestling three incredibly talented women! All of which have something to prove! Ms Bello especially! Kaito knows you feel you were being used by Ms. Mika.”
Haruto: “Now THAT was one sexy bi-“
Kaito turns and Haruto immediately stops mid-sentence.
Kaito: “This makes you dangerous and one I have to focus on greatly, muchly!! Another I look forward to facing is the beautiful and talented Ms Misato! My fellow country woman and one I had hoped to get to know better!”
Kaito: “You know my idol Mr. Yoshida and he has said many good things about you! Do you want to be friends? Maybe we can team up and go in spectacular adventures together?”
Kaito: “ I hope so because other than Haruto here, I need friends.”
Haruto: “What about him?”
Kaito: “Who?”
Kaito walks over and picks up Haruto Who now points to the camera man…
Haruto: “Him you noob.”
Kaito laughs.
Kaito: “All in good time, no Spoilers!!”
Kaito turns back to the camera and grins.
Kaito: “I have waited a long time for this opportunity and as they say lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same location. But I plan to prove this wrong! I plan to strike Emerge and kickstart my adventure, one more successful than the wall being built in Mexico!”
Kaito: “Goodbye, See you on Monday!!”
Kaito bows to the camera Along with Haruto who is placed back the rocking horse with Kaito now sitting on the floor and pushing it for his and Haruto own entertainment.
