Playing the Wildcard was certainly eventful for Supreme Championship Wrestling as well as Glory Braddock herself. On a more personal note, Glory Braddock finally put an end to her rivalry with Polly Playtime. In a brutal strap match, The British Bombshell got revenge for Polly and her Playgrils putting her in that crate during the hours long Trios Cash In Match that ultimately cost her the Television Championship. More important than revenge, this victory also means that Braddock is finished with Polly Playtime and her girls. She can now once again refocus on the main task at hand; and that is to become Supreme Champion by winning the SCW World Tag Team Championship.
Unfortunately that goal still has several obstacles in her way that Glory must overcome. Chief among those obstacles is the obvious problem of finding a tag team partner willing to work with her. During her recent stay in England, she did find one person willing to make an in-ring return specifically to tag team with The British Bombshell; that individual is none other than her childhood best friend Matthew Taylor. Taylor once wrestled under the ring name “The Show Stealer” Matthew Bowden and he even tag teamed with Glory for a brief period. It would appear that having Matthew team with her yet again would be a no brainer solution to her quest for a tag team partner and a big first step towards getting into the tag team title hunt. The problem is that she and Matthew once had an affair, an affair that Glory’s husband, Kurt Logan found out about. Kurt and Glory reconciled and saved their marriage, but would Kurt really be ok with Glory and Matthew working together as a tag team in SCW? Would he really be ok with Glory and Matthew traveling together on SCW tours to cities all over the nation and the world? And that isn’t the only problem Glory has to deal with regarding her tag team title aspirations. Owen Cruze defeated Josh Hudson at Playing The Wildcard to win both the SCW World and United States Championships and then promptly retired. With his retirement both championships were relinquished and now tournaments have been scheduled to crown new champions. Glory Braddock is in the United States Title Tournament. So at the very least Braddock’s Supreme Championship aspirations will be delayed a little longer while the tournament is going on.
The last time there was a tournament to crown a new United States Champion it was contested in one single night and Glory Braddock made it to the finals before losing to Josh Hudson. Braddock would eventually win the championship in a rematch with Hudson several months later and despite that championship victory putting her one step closer towards the Supreme Status she has been seeking, Glory now looks back at that reign as United States Champion as a blemish on what is overall a sparkling record. She is ashamed of how she conducted herself, disparaging and disrespecting the title and the nation it represents. Perhaps this is an opportunity even greater than the Supreme Championship aspirations that she has? She can win the United States Title and finally hold it with dignity and honor. She can have a do-over of her formerly shameful US Title run.
Glory’s first round tournament match against Deanna Frost won’t be for at least a week and a half. There’s plenty of time to prepare for the young up and coming member of the House of Frost. For now Braddock has to readjust to life back in the United States as she, her husband Kurt, and their daughter Dawn are returning to their home in Miami after a stay in London. The stay was multi-purposed; one, Glory wanted Dawn to know what it felt like to live in London, the home of her Braddock heritage. Two, Glory wanted to rediscover what that ‘Braddock heritage’ was all about herself. Both goals were accomplished. Spending time in her native home where she was born and raised helped The British Bombshell reconnect with her legacy, heritage, and served as a reminder of who she was meant to be. The arrogant tyrant who was only out for herself is long gone. She remembers now that wrestling, at its core, is about the spirit of competition, and also entertaining the many fans who come to watch her perform each and every week on Breakdown. She will not let her fans down as she pursues her quest to become United States Champion and then later, hopefully, a World Tag Team Champion.
Braddock finds herself arm in arm with her husband Kurt Logan. Walking alongside them is their daughter Dawn Logan. Braddock is wearing a pink knee length flowy skirt, sandals, and a royal purple silk blouse. Dawn is wearing a simple floral print yellow sundress and sandals. Kurt is dressed in simple khaki shorts, sneakers, and a white t-shirt. They are all smiles as they approach the front door of their Miami, Florida home, seemingly happy to be returning from their stay in England. Yet all is not what it appears, at least when it comes to Glory Braddock. Deep down inside she is still nervous about the future, and not just her busy schedule coming up in SCW. She also has to deal with her cousins, Angelica and Kayla, as she seeks their help to learn more about her mother’s family, and learn the truth about rumors she heard while in England. Braddock also has the more imminent problem of telling her husband Kurt about her encounter with Matthew Taylor. She knows she could just ignore it, not tell Kurt, and just refuse to team with Matthew. Kurt would be none the wiser. But after the affair, Glory feels that honestly is truly the best policy in this case. She should be totally honest with Kurt and tell him what happened when Matthew approached her about wanting to team with her again. She is certain Kurt will not agree with his idea, she just hopes that he won’t get too angry.
“It is nice to see that the place is still standing.” Kurt says jokingly.
“Did you expect our oldest daughter to trash the place?”
“You never know with kids these days.” Kurt answers with a shrug of his shoulders. “They’re wild. Out of control.”
“I’m not wild!” Dawn chimes in. Kurt chuckles quietly and ruffles her hair.
“Not yet but you will be soon enough, I’m sure.”
They are seemingly the ideal family right now. A picture perfect family in a picture perfect setting returning home. But Glory knows that the ideal may be shattered sooner rather than later. She tries to enjoy it while she can as they approach the front door. Kurt tries to open the door but finds it locked.
“Melinda locked the door.”
“Smart girl. I taught her well.” Glory says grinning. Just then they hear footsteps approaching from inside. The trio stand back and wait as they hear the door unlocking. Then they see the door opening. Standing there in the doorway wearing torn denim jeans, black boots, and a black crop top is Melinda Braddock, the oldest of Glory’s children. Melinda, who is still wrestling on an independent circuit in the United States, opted not to travel with the rest of the family back to England. Melinda stayed behind to watch over the house while they were gone. Melinda puts her hands on her hips and smirks.
“You’re on private property. Do I need to call the cops?”
“No, smartass.” Glory says laughing. “Just step aside and let us in.”
“Sure thing, mom.”
Melinda steps to the side. Glory enters first and embraces Melinda with a tight hug. Kurt then joins in and hugs his step-daughter as well. After that hug has ended Mel turns towards her younger sister and smiles from ear to ear.
“And how’s my Dawnie?”
“Great!” Dawn rushes over and hugs her sister. After breaking the embrace Melinda points her sister towards the staircase down the hall. “Go upstairs, kid. You’ll find your room is in working order.”
“Yay!” Dawn rushes off. Kurt and Glory can’t help but laugh a little at their youngest daughter’s enthusiasm. Once Dawn is out of sight, the three remaining family members make their way into the living room. It looks a little messy, messier than the immaculate way Glory and Kurt typically keep it. Braddock scans the room and turns towards Melinda, winking at her.
“Definitely looks like your place.”
“Sorry about that, mom.” Melinda says. “I’ll clean up before I leave.”
“No need.” Glory insists. She approaches the sofa and sits down. Melinda sits down next to her in the center of the sofa and then Kurt sits on the other side of Melinda on that same sofa. Glory kisses Melinda on her cheek.
“Thanks for watching over things while we were gone, love.”
“Don’t mention it. I’m happy to help. But what about you, mom? Did you find what you were looking for?”
“I think I did.” Glory says with a grin on her face. “It really was great to be back at the old family home, it was great to see the old sites in London, Birmingham, and all over England…”
“Did you see the school?”
“Of course she did.” Kurt says with a nod of his head. “Your mother spent most of her time at your grandfather’s wrestling school.”
“That I did. Between dad’s school and the old pub he used to frequent, that’s where I spent most of my time. And let me tell you, Mel, I should have done this a lot sooner.”
“What do you mean?” She asks curiously.
“Well, I have been to the school a few times since dad passed away. But it was always on business. It was either for a graduation or to sign paperwork or something else where I was needed in an official capacity as an owner. Other than those few times I haven’t really set foot in England at all since my dad, your grandfather, passed away. And you know what I realized? I came to realize that I had lost sight of what my father stood for. I lost sight of what he taught me, of who he raised me to be.” Braddock sighs deeply as she fights back tears, as she becomes emotional. “They say that if you don’t learn from history then you are doomed to repeat it. I had forgot my own history, I forgot my past and my heritage. And that led me to make so many mistakes.” Glory looks deep into her daughter’s eyes. “Do NOT make the mistakes I made, Mel. Never forget your past. Never forget where you came from.”
“You don’t have to worry about me.” Melinda shakes her head. “That’s one thing I will never forget. Quite frankly, I miss my time at the school.”
“Oh yeah?” Glory asks. Melinda nods her head. “What do you miss about it?”
“Oh nothing.” Melinda shakes her head. Then she stands up and starts to walk away.
“Where are you running off to?” Kurt asks curiously.
“I’m just gonna go upstairs and tell Dawn goodbye.”
“Are you leaving already?” Glory seems genuinely surprised. “You can stay for dinner. This is still your house.”
“I know but I’m going to be very busy in the next few days. I have a date with Clyde, Fiona and I have match in the next few days in St. Louis, then even more stuff with Clyde.”
“Oh come on, love.” Glory insists. “Dinner won’t take long. I have been in England for so long, you and I need to catch up.”
“We can catch up another time, ok mom?”
“I suppose so.” Glory says nodding her head. She stands up and approaches Melinda. They embrace in a tight hug. “I love you, Mel.”
“Back at you, mom.” With that, Melinda turns and exits the living room. Glory can hear her daughter running up the stairs. Glory sighs as she makes her way back to the sofa and sits back down next to Kurt. She looks over at her husband curiously.
“Do you think Mel was acting a little strange just now?”
“What do you mean?” Kurt asks. “I mean, honestly, she hasn’t been acting any stranger than usual. She’s been different ever since hooking up with Clyde Sutter again.”
“Don’t remind me about that.” Glory rolls her eyes. “I am still not exactly thrilled with our daughter dating him.”
“I thought you had promised to try and accept him into the family?”
“I did and I genuinely am trying.” Glory answers sharply. “But it isn’t easy for me considering our past with him and his family. Sutter was bad enough to accept on his own but when I learned that he was actually related to the Van Stanton family, the same people who ended my father’s career, and this boy, their son, once got my daughter involved with drugs…” her voice trails off. Kurt chimes in quickly while he has a chance.
“But he said he has changed. And quite frankly, I believe him.”
“You’re a better person than I am, Kurt.” Glory says quietly. “I still find it difficult to accept him.”
“Maybe this is a discussion you need to have with Melinda?” Kurt suggests. Glory nods her head.
“I agree, I do need to talk to Mel. It feels as if she and I are growing further and further apart and I hate it. I hate not being able to repair our relationship. It’s just that I have so much going on right now…”
“Yes, you want to become SCW Supreme Champion. You also have an opportunity to become SCW United States Champion in this tournament. But don’t you think your family is more important than your career? I thought that was one of the lessons you learned while we were overseas?”
“You’re right. One of the many mistakes I have made was putting my career ahead of my family and that is a mistake I will not make again. But I wasn’t talking about my championship aspirations when I said I have so much going on in my life right now.”
“Oh?”
“I need to talk to my cousin.” Glory answers. “I need to talk to Angelica.”
“What’s wrong between you and Angelica?” Kurt asks curiously.
“Nothing is wrong between us. It’s something I found out in England. Something I haven’t even told you yet, or the children. Honestly, I haven’t even come to terms with it myself.” Glory shakes her head as the emotions once again return swiftly. Kurt holds her tightly in a hug.
“It’s ok, babe. I’m here for you.” He says lovingly. “What did you find out in England?”
“You know how I am afraid of me and Mel growing apart? My own mother and I grew apart. After mom and dad divorced, I started to grow more and more distant from mother, and a large part of that was due to the resentment I held towards her. I resented her for not trying to fight for custody of myself and my sister. Not that I hated dad and wanted to live with her. I loved dad just as much as I loved my mother. But the fact that mom didn’t even care enough to try made me think she didn’t love us. So I resented her. And we grew apart. We didn’t even really begin to mend our relationship until near the end of her life.” Glory reaches up and wipes a tear from her eye. “I am forever haunted by that.”
“It’s not your fault.” Kurt insists.
“I know. But that’s not the problem. I recently came to learn that mom may have had a good reason behind running away, running to the United States and not fighting for custody of me and my sister. She was being stalked, Kurt. And I have reason to believe that her stalker is the same creep who murdered my aunt Kelly, Angelica’s mother.”
“So you think your mom ran away to lead the stalker away from you and your sister and your father?” Kurt asks. Glory nods her head.
“Yeah.” Braddock shakes her head. “Maybe its silly, but it’s been eating me alive with guilt, the fact that I have held such a grudge against her, my own mother, for so long and now to think that there was no reason for it, for any of it. That I should have been grateful for her, because she was protecting me.”
“You had no way of knowing, babe. No possible way of knowing any of it. Your reactions were entirely rational. Understandable. You have absolutely nothing to feel guilty about.”
“Maybe you’re right but still, I owe it to myself and to my conscience to dig deeper. And maybe I owe it to Angelica? That whole situation set the stage for her becoming who she is today. The death of her mother, my aunt Kelly, it changed Angelica forever. She deserves to know and maybe she can help me through whatever problems I still have with my own mother?”
“If that’s what you need to do then you have my full support.” Kurt says with a smile. Then he kisses her on the lips. “So maybe what you did in England isn’t really finished? It’s just getting started?”
“More than likely.” Glory sighs deeply. “Speaking of which, there is one other thing that you and I need to talk about.”
“What is it?” Kurt asks as Glory stands up and then gently pulls on Kurt’s hands to get him to stand up as well. Glory looks deep in his eyes, they are loving eyes right now but she is unsure of how loving they will be in a few moments.
“We should go into the kitchen and get some drinks.”
“Uh oh…drinks? This can’t be good.”
“It isn’t.” Glory takes him by the hand and leads him out of the living room and into the next room, the kitchen. Kurt sits down in a nearby chair while Glory retrieves two wine glasses and then a bottle of wine. She pours Kurt a glass of wine and then pours herself some wine as well. Kurt takes a sip.
“The good stuff…this really is bad, huh?”
“Yeah.” Glory nods her head. “Look, I won’t beat around the bush. Sometimes its best just to rip the band-aid off so here it goes. Near the end of our stay in England, I was approached by Matthew.”
“Matthew as in Taylor?” Kurt asks, remembering full well of the affair between Matthew and Glory. Glory nods her head. “What did he want?”
“Apparently he had heard that I have plans to eventually make a move into the SCW tag team division in order to complete my Supreme Championship. Matthew wants to make a comeback himself, have one last run before calling it a career. And he wanted to know if he could be my tag team partner.”
“Oh he did, did he?” Kurt is eerily calm at this point, which makes Glory a little nervous. “What did you tell him?”
“At first I told him absolutely not, because our…past…would make things extremely awkward with you. He was persistent though. To shut him up I promised I would at least ask you if you would be ok with it.”
“Thanks for the consideration I suppose.” Kurt says as he takes a sip.
“So is that a yes or a no?”
“Oh if I actually have a say then absolutely fucking not.” Kurt says, his voice growing slightly louder. “There is no way in hell I want you anywhere near him.” He sighs deeply. “Then again, knowing you, you will probably do whatever you want anyway. That’s just who you are. That’s how you were built and raised.”
“Kurt, please, I’m being serious. If you don’t want me to then…”
“And I’m being serious too.” Kurt finishes the rest of his wine in one big gulp. It is clear that he is not happy. “Do I want you to do this? Hell no. But you are an adult, Glory. You are a grown woman. I cannot control what you do when you travel around with SCW. Hell, you could have been having affairs with other men before Matthew and I didn’t know about it.”
“Are you implying that I would cheat on you?”
“You did once.”
Glory sighs and shakes her head. The tears return to her face. “Kurt I…”
“Look, if you want my blessing then you have it.” He shakes his head. “But I don’t have to like it or approve of it.” With that said, Kurt stands up and storms out of the room. Glory sits down and buries her face in her hands and begins to cry. Has she just made a terrible mistake? Is this a can of worms that she should not have opened?
